Mission Statement:

Team Portland Tennis Association (TPTA) is an organization in the greater Portland (Oregon) area that promotes tennis to the LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer) community, and to impart a spirit of fun and positive competition for all levels of tennis players. Through social and friendly competitive organization, TPTA strives to create a supportive atmosphere for sports enthusiasts in the community.

Besides organising weekly tennis play, TPTA hosts an annual tournament called the Rose City Open over the Labor Day weekend. Players come from all over the country, Canada and sometimes other parts of the world. It provides the opportunity to compete and socialize in the beautiful and friendly city of Portland. The tournament is a GLTA-sanctioned event with proceeds benefiting various charities like Q Center, Cascade AIDS Project, and Portland After School Tennis & Education.

History:

TPTA was founded by Steve Yu and a group of tennis enthusiasts in 1991. The same year, TPTA hosted its first tennis tournament – Rose City Open, making it one of the oldest GLTA tournaments!

Back in the 1990s, with the help of former TPTA participant Gary Maffei, vice president of the Harry A. Merlo Foundation, which donated to the University of Portland, TPTA was able to host its Sunday tennis at the tennis center on University of Portland campus. TPTA moved out of that facility to Glendoveer Golf Course's indoor tennis facility in northeast Portland in mid-2009.

Since its inception, , TPTA has offered an opportunity for tennis enthusiasts in Portland metro's LGBTQ community to gather for tennis in a fun and social environment.

In 2005, TPTA has adopted its first official set of by-laws.

2010 was a big year for TPTA. Rose City Open turned 20 years old, and TPTA raised $7500 for our charities! The annual event that takes place over the Labor Day weekend has attracted tennis players from all over the United States and Canada.

2011 – TPTA reached a big milestone, turning 20 years old. Rose City Open XXI raised $4500 for our charities.

2012 – In February, TPTA adopted a revision to its by-laws. The revised by-laws provide more flexibility for the executive members to operate TPTA, as well as an opportunity for the Association to explore the option of setting up a membership structure.
